BEAUTY AND HEALTH FROM THE SEA
There is a good reason why the idea of a day at the beach stirs up fantasies of ultimate well-being and relaxation. Call it our collective unconscious, or human instinct, maybe the mystic heart or spiritual intuition. Whatever you call it, the soothing effects of a day at the beach is no fantasy. Human cells emerged from the sea and our body, like mother Earth, is largely composed of water. It is no wonder that we instinctively know that seawater is a rich source of health and beauty. While modern science confirms the seawater’s therapeutic value for our bodies, the holistic community has long acknowledged its benefits for the mind and the soul.
Seawater contains all the trace minerals present in the human body. When you soak in seawater, you bathe your skin in a mixture that contains all the minerals and nutrients that form the building blocks for human life. The skin is the largest organ of the human body and when plunged in seawater it immediately scans for nutrients needed to fortify its cells and it absorbs all the elements it craves. While seawater supplies the skin with goodies, it also helps to remove toxins from the body. Increased elasticity of the skin is one of the frequently cited properties of seawater. These and many other beneficial qualities of seawater to the human body have been known for centuries. But as mankind moved away from the seashore we stored this basic knowledge in the recesses of our minds. Yet we have not forgotten the healing powers of seawater.
A day at the beach can heal and revitalize more than just your skin. You have at your disposal all the tools to make it a complete sensory experience. The soft white sandy beaches, themselves replete with nutrients and minerals, are ideal for reflexology. You can shape the sand any way you want and use it to apply pressure to the exact points on your feet or hands, squeezing and massaging exactly where you feel you need it most. You can do this while resting on the beach, under a clear blue sky, surrounded by warm and blue tropical water, basking in vitamin D, breathing fresh sea air with an increased ability to absorb oxygen, while the rhythmic sound of the waves soothes the wave patterns in your brain, and the heat of the sun stimulates the release of endorphins, that feel good chemical that makes us feel relaxed and less stressed. The odds are good that you will drift off into a deeply calm and relaxed state. While in that state, listen to your heart and notice your respiration rate. Relaxing your body in this way can help revitalize your mind and is fertile soil for a spiritual exploration.
The après-beach is also important if you wish to maximize the therapeutic experience. The calming effect can be nourished for life if it is properly absorbed early on. Your bed and food should not be too far from the beach, at most a short stroll. Each day at the beach should be followed by relaxed afternoons so that at night you can rest deeply and soundly. It is in this realm of rest and that you can best experience the wonderful, insightful and therapeutic world of dreams.
p.s. If you want to go home feeling more alert, relaxed and energized, then one day at the beach may not be enough. Nature nurtures, so be good to yourself and invest some time to soak in all the benefits that the sun, seawater and the beach provide.
